Subject Selection
Cambridge International A Level is recognized around the world by schools, universities and employers. The certification is accepted as proof of academic ability for entry to universities worldwide. Cambridge International A Level typically takes two years to complete.
Choosing A Level subjects can be a daunting prospect, not least so because there are many subjects to choose from. We advise all students to thoroughly research their choice of subjects. They should know what topics the subject will cover and what career prospects it offers.
When making this decision, students are advised to consider the following:
- Subjects they enjoy studying
- Subjects they are good at
- Career implications of their subject choice
- Whether they meet subject prerequisites
Psychology, Sociology, Law and History
Studying Psychology helps develop a deep understanding of the approaches used to analyse psychological research and evaluate theories. Students are familiarized with different psychological approaches while studying a range of topics and engaging in debate. Throughout the course, students learn how to construct concise essays and use evidence to reach a reasoned conclusion.
The Sociology course helps students understand how individual lives are shaped by social institutions such as the education system, religion and the mass media. The subject investigates key contemporary problems like poverty and crime.
Studying Law introduces students to the role of the Law in today’s society and creates awareness about the rights and responsibilities of individuals. Studying the Law enhances students’ analytic ability, critical thinking skills and problem-solving capability.
Through the study of History, students gain a valuable range of key life skills; notably the ability to appreciate and compare different points of view, explore how an author’s perspective may affect his/her judgement, and understand how often complex motives lie behind an individual’s actions.
Media Studies, Art and Design and IT
Media Studies A Level offers students the opportunity to combine a theoretical understanding of the mass media with acquired practical skills in media production. Students learn how media industries operate and also how media texts are analysed.
The Art and Design department is a lively place, with a pleasant teaching and learning environment. The course presents students with exciting and challenging opportunities to learn more about what it means to be a visual artist. Media Studies an IT are excellent supplements to the Art and Design course.
The Information Technology (IT) is a practical subject and it’s syllabus introduces students about emerging technologies and their implementations. The impact of IT on all aspects of everyday life is immense. The enormity of the impact can be seen in industry, commerce, transport, leisure, medicine and at home. As a result, students understand the life cycles of IT and how they affect the workplace. They also gain an understanding of the wider impact of IT on society in general.
Economics, Business and Accounting
Many issues we face in society today are economic in nature. Students gain an understanding of economic ideas and their application in the real world. From the Economics course students gain:
- A knowledge and understanding of key economic issues
- The ability to apply this knowledge to the analysis of economic problems
- The ability to assess economic problems and find evidence to support their arguments.
For all our budding entrepreneurs! Business helps you develop a strong understanding of business organizations, the markets they serve and the process of adding value. This is a subject that allows students to understand and appreciate current affairs and equips them with knowledge and skills that are relevant to everyday life.
Accounting provides an excellent foundation for all those who are considering a career in finance. The subject aims to stimulate students’ interest in business organizations and enable them to have a better understanding of financial issues.
Mathematics
Mathematics complements certain subjects and provides breadth and balance to an art or languages based program. It helps to develop students’ logical thinking and problem solving skills. Most students opt for this course because it complements their education in physics and engineering.
Biology, Chemistry and Physics
Studying Biology at A Level helps students develop a scientific basis for understanding biological issues. It is a logical choice for any student who wishes to pursue a biology based career such in; Medicine, Nursing, Veterinary Medicine, Physiotherapy, Forensic Science or Food Science.
Chemistry is the study of substances; what they are made of, how they interact and what role they play in living things. A good grasp of chemical concepts will provide students with the knowledge that may one day help them improve healthcare and tackle environmental problems.
Physics is a fascinating subject for all those with an inquisitive mind. The course promotes the understanding and application of physical concepts. Physics is usually taken by students who wish to take up engineering courses at university.
Literature in English
Literature encourages students to understand how narrative works. They are also introduced to the different aspects of genre. The study of Literature exposes students to a wide range of texts and develops an appreciation for reading. The course takes a critical approach to analysing texts and its cultural meaning.
Urdu
Urdu is offered in A Level for those interested in the language. Students develop the ability to communicate confidently and clearly in Urdu. As goes with the study of any language, the study of Urdu offers an insight into the culture and contemporary society of Pakistan.
